When it comes to LED upgrade projects, the positive effects on the environment and maintenance saving are usually overlooked by the money saved on energy bills.

By upgrading the store from fluorescent to LED, Waitrose achieved a 45% energy saving for the Headington branch, whilst tripling light levels up to the current design specification, ensuring products ‘pop’ on the shelves for improved customer experience.

By changing the colour temperature from 3000k to 4000k in this branch, we have delivered an energetic and modern atmosphere to the store, addressing previous complaints about the fluorescent lighting in previous years and providing a neutral tone of light to fresh produce that could have been visually misrepresented by poor colour quality of light.

This project featured our innovative Triteq luminaire, which fits all conventional 600 square grid ceilings and has targeted light spread in both axial and transverse directions, ideal for use in aisles to ensure product is bright and enticing.

The fresh fruit & vegetables area at the front of the store, is given a whole new lease of life by using our high efficiency and high output Metro lighting system, which is also a visual anchor for this key department of the store and promotes the healthy eating drive that Waitrose have at the heart of their brand.

The use of our bespoke nautical pendant matched the intended feel of Waitrose’s Meat and Fish counter area, giving an authentical feed to this area.

The result for Waitrose is a cost-effective modernisation of their existing lighting, minimising disruption to the store and allowing a seamless relaunch to happy customers!

This marks just one of many successful LED refurbishments that EDGE Lighting has undertaken to provide cost effective lighting upgrades across their estate.

Fluorescent lamps to be phased out in 2023

The intentional use of mercury in the EU has steadily decreased over the past 15 years thanks to the adoption and implementation of a comprehensive …

The intentional use of mercury in the EU has steadily decreased over the past 15 years thanks to the adoption and implementation of a comprehensive set of EU rules limiting its use in products. In addition to these intended uses, there are unintentional emissions of mercury to air from several activities that use mercury-containing fuels or raw materials.

So, what exactly is the RoHS Directive?

RoHS stands for “Restriction of the use of Hazardous Substances”. In this instance, it refers to the use of mercury in lamps. Mercury is considered a hazardous substance which is why it’s use in electrical equipment is banned. Up until recently, they were exemptions for t5 and t8 fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps, and special purpose lamps. Since then, these exemptions (defined in Annex III) have been amended. Due to this, the production of many fluorescent lamps will be banned. The only exceptions are HPD and special purpose lamps, as they may be produced for another 3-5 years.

In addition, the ban refers to production of corresponding lamps. The use and the sale or purchase of stock products are still allowed. The RoHS directives only provide for a so-called “phasing out” of non-sustainable light sources.

It was already decided that the placing on the market of the T8 fluorescent lamp will be banned from September 2023. The amendments to the RoHS directives from last spring put the end of the fluorescent tube a few days earlier: from August 25, 2023, T8 lamps will be phased out together with T5 fluorescent lamps.

It will also hit compact fluorescent lamps with plug-in bases as early as February 25. An extension of the exemptions to 3-5 years is planned for HPD lamps and special purpose lamps (such as for UV-C disinfection with lamps).

Fluorescent Lamps or LED Light Bulbs – A comparison

T8 and T5 fluorescent tubes may be cheaper initially, but LED tubes are more cost-effective in the long term. The benefits of an LED light bulb vs. fluorescent bulbs include:

  • More Energy Efficient: If you replaced all the bulbs in your office with LEDs, you could conservatively use 60% less power to light up your facility. That’s because the energy-saving technologies used to produce LEDs have far outpaced that of fluorescent linear tubes.
  • Longer Life Expectancy: LED bulbs last two to four times longer than fluorescent lighting.
  • More Cost-Effective: While you will spend more money upfront on LED bulbs, you’ll ultimately make it up in energy savings and lower long-term maintenance costs.
  • Better for the Environment: Unlike linear fluorescent tubes, LED lights don’t contain any mercury. Fluorescent lights must be handled carefully because mercury is harmful to the skin and can contaminate the environment.
  • Instant On: With LED bulbs, you don’t have to wait for the flickering to stop. Also, you can turn them on and off all you want – frequent clicks of the switch do not shorten an LED bulb lifespan.

Key Dates of the official end-of-market deadlines:

February 24, 2023: end of long-life fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent lamps with non-integrated gear (CFL-ni) with less than 20,000 hours.

August 24, 2023: end of T5 and T8 fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent lamps (with a lifespan of more than 20,000 hours).

August 31, 2023: end of halogen capsules with G9 G4 GY 6.35 base.

The higher purchase costs of LED illuminants compared to conventional lamps may seem daunting at first. However, the combination of a significantly longer service life and improved efficiency means that LED lighting pays for itself after just a few years, depending on the application.

The team at Edge Lighting can showcase these energy savings in a project for you, contact us at sales@edgelighting.co.uk and we’ll do our best to help!

The Value of Effective Lighting in a retail environment

Before looking at the benefits of effective lighting in a retail environment, retailers must first think of LED lighting as an investment for their spaces. …

Before looking at the benefits of effective lighting in a retail environment, retailers must first think of LED lighting as an investment for their spaces. Picking the right wall colour and other decor decisions are just as important as choosing the right lighting for a new retail venue or upgrading existing lighting. Commercial lighting is no longer just high output fluorescent lamps and bulky inefficient metal halide fixtures. A bright and fresh look for an old storefront can be achieved with high-quality LED lighting which then brings in a whole host of benefits.

Strategic Lighting in Shopping Centers and Grocery Stores

When shopping for clothing, customers need to be able to thoroughly inspect the items they wish to try on and purchase. Being able to see the difference in the navy-blue sweater and the black sweater next to it is important not only to the shopper but to the retailer as well. In a clothing store, lighting with a high color rendering index (CRI) is important as it will increase footfall and boost sales. LED lighting allows the colors of the fresh fruits and vegetables to appear more vibrant. Even fresh meat coolers are utilizing high CRI lighting to accent the color of the meat. Shoppers associate the color of fruits, vegetables, and meats with the freshness and quality of the product. It’s a no-brainer, a shopper is more likely to make a purchase when the retailer appeals to these senses.

Edge Lighting provides ambient lighting by utilising high level continuous linear LED luminaires and high-bay luminaires with optics that provide good vertical illuminance to shelving and displays. For our project at Waitrose – Kings Cross the high-level lighting was designed in such a way that it blended in with the cast iron roof structure. Over more specialised retail areas such as Fruit and Veg and Health and Beauty the linear system is dropped down to a lower level creating a more intimate lit space.

How many times have you walked into a store and been drawn into a specific display? Retailers want to be able to capture their consumers attention and direct it towards the displays they consider having ‘hot items’ and influence their focus this way, which then persuades their shopping decisions. To achieve this, retailers must implement proper lighting as an effective and efficient solution that Edge Lighting can help clients with. Deciding where to place a retail display within your store is important but the accent lighting for this display is what really elevates the customer experience.

Lighting Effects on Shopper Behaviours

A well-designed lighting system will help retail shoppers have a more relaxed, tailored shopping experience as opposed to a colder, less inclusive one. Having lighting at the forefront of design decisions will allow retailer’s customers to leave with a positive memory from their time at the store, which can then lead to repeat purchases down the line. All these factors will effectively drive more sales and make for better business for the client which is their goal.

Lighting in a retail setting allows customers to feel a welcoming presence from when they enter the building to when they leave the store and have purchased their item.

However large or small the business, it should be any retailer’s aim to maximise the attractiveness of their products by bringing out their true colours. A high-quality LED lighting system offers the ideal solution for achieving this, which Edge Lighting can provide to clients.

They say you never stop learning, and here at Edge Lighting we couldn’t agree more.

2017 was an education for us as we further developed our ‘smart’ lighting range, with countless options for automatic light control and daylight dimming, we are taking away the onus for staff to think about lighting and can concentrate more on our next generation!

The aptly named “Eduteq” fitting is telling us as much about lighting as we tell our clients, with capabilities for DALI controls, daylight switching / dimming integration and corridor function being the three most popular upgrades we have delivered.

We are continuing our learning process with new environments bringing new challenges along the way, but armed with so many different lighting solutions embedded into such an unassuming looking luminaire we are tackling those head on and with great effect.

If you feel you have a lighting enquiry that requires an intelligent lighting solution, why not consider Edge Lighting?

August 2012 was a breakthrough month for Edge Lighting, supplying our first project using only LED light source technology, at a point in the market where the longevity and quality was often questioned of LEDs.

5 years on and we can look back at Waitrose in Stratford Upon Avon, one of the first stores in UK to be fully lit with LED.

Light level readings show these have depreciated only 7% in 5 years running for 22,000 hours, and still looks as fresh as when it was first installed. This has surpassed all expectations and we are so pleased to be able to reward Waitrose on their willingness to look to the future and invest sensibly in their properties.

Many other retailers that transitioned to using LEDs from other manufacturers at a similar time have either had to have their LED lighting replaced because it had not lasted, or look dated because they used poor quality components.

We would like to congratulate Philips OEM whom supplied our LED modules and drivers on this project for the quality of the components provided, and with the great advancements in LED technology since 2012 we are confident this is just the beginning of a great portfolio of completed projects with a lasting impression.

Meet our Eduteq, Edge’s new solution to old conventional T8 tubes flooding schools with electricity bills that just don’t float.

At 130 luminaire lumens per circuit watt and available in different lengths and outputs, Edge Lighting have developed an economical and efficient solution to a dated industry standard.

That’s all well but is that a smart fitting? Does that come with DALI control you ask?

Yes, and there’s more!

This luminaire can house a wide array of components and accessories; offering timed presence detection, programmable operating hours, automated daylight dimming, corridor function and pretty much any emergency function you can think of.

So next time you’re after a more technical approach to your lighting system, think Edge Lighting, think Eduteq.

Not exactly one from the catalogue, Waitrose at Harrow Weald features a concealed grid plaster ceiling with varying ceiling heights.

EDGE Lighting were required to find a retrofit solution to allow the existing ceiling to be retained, involving site surveys, innovative engineering and a lighting design to suit.

The end result for Waitrose is a cost effective modernisation of their existing lighting, minimising disruption to the store, and limiting resources required to a component level where possible.

This marks just one of many successful LED retrofits that EDGE Lighting has undertaken to provide cost effective lighting upgrades.

EDGE designed the shape of the Metro to run between aisles and interlink as one piece. This has the added benefit of various outputs all programmable using Philips simple set drivers which are programmable to the desired current which enables exact light levels to be met as required.

We have had good feedback from the client post-installation, and we thoroughly enjoyed working on this project, which required innovation, creative lighting design and a high level of targeted illumination on vertical working planes.

Waitrose in Bayswater was always going to be an interesting project from the outset, boasting an industrial looking concrete coffer ceiling type, which allowed the low ceiling height to remain as high as possible.

Edge developed a lighting tray system, which could house both recessed linear LED strips and recessed spotlights. Its versatility was apparent as different areas of the store could opt out of the spotlights, retaining the linear in the tray for areas only requiring ambient lighting.

The result was a store combining retro ceiling structure with state of the art lighting systems, this simplistic design and grey colouring of the lighting tray allowed this to blend into the concrete ceiling, which makes the lighting even more subtle.
