Situated atop Grand Central Station in Birmingham, this John Lewis Department Store has a unique location. Spanning 170,000 ft of selling space, this is one of John Lewis’ biggest yet, and right in the centre of Birmingham it is a statement of intent from the retail giant, and the lighting had to match this ethos.
From a lighting perspective there were many feature displays each having to be lit independently. In some areas ceilings were double height, notably on the ground floor, where an Italian coffee producer has an original Fiat 500 as part of their display.
Edge Lighting Services supplied over 7000 spotlights, using Philips Crisp White LEDs, which really bring to life the colour of the merchandise giving it depth and richness.
Other areas that required special consideration were the ‘Place to Eat’ café” on the fourth floor which required a recessed track system to fit the interlocking ceiling design. Part of the ladies fashion department had a ceiling made of tubular steel, so a special twin gimbal spot light was required to fit this, other areas had drop slats and plaster bulkheads to add to the variety of applications.
