WAITROSE JOHN BARNES
Edge Lighting completed a full DALI mains and emergency lighting upgrade at Waitrose’s store on Finchley Road, marking a significant milestone as the first fully integrated Building Energy Management System (BEMS) within the Waitrose estate.
A key aspect of this project was the need for a dimmable lighting control system, capable of dynamically adjusting light levels by area, time of day, and season.
This ensures that customers experience optimal lighting throughout their shopping journey while simultaneously achieving significant energy savings where possible.
Integrating the BEMS for real-time, adaptive control posed a challenge; however, through close collaboration with UC Build, Paul Earl, and Novus Integration, Edge Lighting successfully delivered a seamless solution.
WAITROSE'S NEW STORE CONCEPT
In addition to the lighting system upgrade, the store has undergone a comprehensive transformation, boasting the latest design concepts.
This includes a fully updated refrigeration system, an expanded wine offering, a fresh fruit and vegetable department, a new-look bakery, and revamped signage and graphics throughout the store.
It also features the first fully chilled beer, wine, and spirits department.
The store is also pioneering with the first dedicated internal space for on-demand grocery collections, reflecting the growing popularity of orders through Deliveroo and Uber Eats.
- Triteq: Designed for retail aisles, this fixture featured angled optics that made merchandise stand out, complemented by a central row for ambient lighting.
- Gimteq Duo: A bi-axial square frame design that offered 360-degree tilting up to 30 degrees, ensuring that merchandise or graphics were always in focus, enhancing visual appeal.
- Traqer Twin: Twin track-mounted spotlight that was specifically chosen for its versatility and precision, ideal for highlighting the fruit & veg areas within the store.
RESULTS
The completion of this project has transformed the store on Finchley Road into a benchmark for modern retail lighting. The dynamic lighting adjustments have enhanced customer satisfaction by ensuring optimal light levels throughout the day, while also achieving significant energy savings that support Waitrose’s sustainability goals.
This project not only showcased Edge Lighting’s expertise in creating customized lighting solutions but also established a new standard for future retail projects within the Waitrose estate and beyond.
