PUREGYM HOUNSLOW

A lighting scheme designed around how members move through and experience the space.

When PureGym set out to trial a new design standard at their London Hounslow site, the 19,300 sq ft unit at 54 High Street became an opportunity to rethink what a gym should feel like. The ‘Feel PureGym Good’ campaign sets a new creative direction for the brand, and the lighting needed to match that ambition from the moment members walked through the door.

Edge Lighting worked alongside Barrows design agency, the PureGym design team, and Wren Construction to design, supply, and commission the full scheme. The interior language of the new design direction was defined by curves, curved walls, curved furniture and PureGym signage. The lighting was designed to complement and enhance that visual language throughout.

Rather than a uniform approach across the floor the scheme was built around zones, each with its own character, intensity, and purpose. We delivered this using Master Connect control system integrated throughout our products, allowing for grouping of products and fine tuning light intensity from zone to zone.

ENTRANCE AND GYM FLOOR

Drumteq Maxi downlights are oriented as a runway path from the door, guiding members through the turnstiles into the PureGym Central area.

A 3-metre Orbit 3000 pendant hangs above the threshold, its circular form reflected in the curved timber inlay below,  a deliberate design statement. Above the Hub, a Linq oval continues the same language, while smaller Orbit 600 linear pendants carry through into the Studio, keeping the forms scaled appropriately to each space.

Out on the main gym floor, we utlised Linq modular oval lighting rafts that echo the curved walls, furniture, and PureGym signage below. Two configurations were used: a 9.56m × 2m frame and a 3.8m × 1m version. Where the rafts define the zones overhead, Linflex 3D extrusions work at wall level, rebated into the curved wall surfaces so the profile follows the geometry precisely, casting a sharp beam that underlines the signage lighting.

RECOVERY ROOM

The Recovery room sits apart from the energy of the main floor — a dedicated space for members to recharge and recover. Twilight fittings deliver a soft up/down wash across the room, their slender profile keeping the atmosphere calm and unhurried.

WOMEN'S WORKOUT SPACE

PureGym’s dedicated Women’s Workout Space sits alongside the main gym floor as a private area with its own free weights, adjustable benches, and fixed pin equipment. Linteq 50 linears provide accurate, low-glare light across the equipment areas — well-suited to a training environment where members are working in close proximity to mirrors. A Linq raft above the signage wall ties the space back to the curved design language used throughout the gym.

RESULTS

  • The curved design language runs throughout, Linq rafts overhead, Linflex 3D traces the walls and every surface plays its part.
  • Each space has its own atmosphere, lit to reflect its purpose.
  • Master Connect ties it all together, managing light levels across every zone from a single control system.
